The arrival of Governor-General Sir Bernard Freyberg in New Zealand in 1946 was met with the usual pomp and ceremony, but there was added excitement because of his New Zealand connections. He had also been a popular commander of the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force and the 2nd New Zealand Division in the Second World War.
