Kōrero: Voluntary welfare organisations

Children's health camp

From 1919 health camps were organised by community groups for children at risk of malnutrition and diseases such as tuberculosis. The camps multiplied during the economic depression of the 1930s. A Federation of Health Camps was founded in 1936 and the following year a campaign to establish permanent health camps around the country began. The Roxburgh Health Camp – the subject of this 1945 film clip – was one such permanent camp. The camps aimed to improve each child's health by teaching good habits and providing sensible routines and a balanced diet.
