Farewell Spit, at the north-west tip of the South Island, is home to the South Island’s largest gannet colony. The spit is also utilised by migrant species such as godwits, knots and turnstones, and smaller numbers of rarer species. 112 bird species (including 35 wading species) have been recorded in the area.
