Christian churches have made impressive efforts to improve the lives of recent immigrants to New Zealand. In this film clip the Reverend Mark Beale, of St Elizabeth's Anglican church in Clendon, Auckland, explains that his church has two groups for older people. One is for Pākehā and the other for Pacific Island women, most of whom are from Niue. The Pacific Island group learn weaving and bring along their grandchildren to mix in an environment where the Niuean language is spoken freely. This project receives support from the Selwyn Foundation and from the New Zealand Council of Christian Social Services, which brings together the social-service agencies of the Anglican, Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, Presbyterian and Salvation Army churches.
