The 150th anniversary of the Treaty of Waitangi was commemorated in 1990. At the treaty grounds in the Bay of Islands on Waitangi Day were Queen Elizabeth II, the Māori Queen Dame Te Atairangikaahu, Prime Minister Geoffrey Palmer and many other notables. Bishop Whakahuihui Vercoe, Te Pihopa o Aotearoa (the head of the Māori arm of the Anglican Church), gave a dramatic sermon calling for the treaty to be honoured, commenting, 'as I remember the history of our land, I weep here on the shores of the Bay of Islands.'
