On 23 August 1995 Kiwi International airline’s first flight left Hamilton bound for Sydney, a milestone recorded in this film. The airline’s founder, Waikato entrepreneur Ewan Wilson, aimed to provide ‘no frills’ flights that were cheaper than those of established airlines. Most passengers were happy to forgo the usual airline food and take their own sandwiches. The airline survived only a few years, but one outcome of the initiative was that Hamilton airport was upgraded to service international flights.
