Kōrero: Suicide

Jim Anderton at SPINZ Seminar Series 2008

Suicide Prevention Information New Zealand (SPINZ) was established in 1999 as an initiative of the Mental Health Foundation and the Centre for Youth Health. Initially the service focused on youth, but from 2004 it was broadened to include all ages. The service aims to provide high-quality information about suicide prevention and it holds a biennial seminar series. In 2008 the series focused on suicide and the media. It was opened by Jim Anderton, associate minister of health and minister for suicide prevention. Anderton had lost a daughter to suicide. Here he speaks about the responsibilities of the media in relation to suicide.
