The highly mechanised production line used in Wattie’s Hastings factory was set up because of labour shortages, and was an advantage when it came to processing peas. Automation allowed vegetables to be picked, taken to the factory and canned within a matter of hours, and would become an increasing feature of factory production in many industries.
