Kōrero: Transport – overview

Auckland Harbour Bridge opening

Video file

When the Auckland Harbour Bridge opened in 1959 there was a celebratory parade, and cars queued up on the southern approach to the bridge to make a first crossing. The bridge was a vital link in the motorway system designed to ease traffic congestion in Auckland. By 1960 Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin had also developed or planned motorways.
