Kōrero: Transport – overview

The Kingston Flyer

Video file

The Kingston Flyer, a tourist train which operated in northern Southland from 1971, was a relic of the heyday of steam transport. Steam locomotives travelled on railway lines that were constructed throughout New Zealand from the 1870s, moving people and freight more quickly and efficiently than ships or road-based vehicles.
