Portland Island was once home to a Māori whare wānanga (school of learning) and, later, a small community of lighthouse keepers. Since 1984, when the lighthouse was automated, sheep and dotterels (birds) have been the only permanent residents. The owners of Onenui Station on the mainland run sheep on the island and staff come over to shear them, the subject of this Country calendar documentary.
