New Zealand has long sought a free trade deal with the United States but political issues such as New Zealand’s anti-nuclear status stymied efforts up until the late 2000s. Negotiations were scheduled to get underway in March 2009 for a possible free trade deal between the United States, New Zealand, Brunei, Chile, Singapore, Australia, Peru and Vietnam, but the election of a Democratic president in the United States in 2008 saw talks postponed until November 2009.
