Asparagus harvest, 2008

Asparagus growers have trialled mechanical picking but it has not been successful. The sprouts must be harvested by hand. Growers can find it hard to find New Zealand labour so they often rely on imported labour – in this case Samoans in the fields and backpackers in the packing house.
