Broiler chicken farms

Video file

The poultry industry is no stranger to protest action from those concerned about the conditions under which chickens are raised. This footage was filmed secretly in 2003 in a farm that raises thousands of broiler chickens annually. The film was taken by a group called Auckland Animal Action to show that, because the chickens grow rapidly, some have difficulty in walking properly because of inadequately developed bones, and some die. However, a report commissioned by the Poultry Industry Association of New Zealand in 2005 found that the welfare of broilers in New Zealand was high by international standards.
