Kōrero: Bush trams and other log transport

In the years after the Second World War there was a heightened demand for exotic timber, especially pinus radiata. This was largely to provide housing for a fast-growing population – the result of the baby boom and high levels of immigration. At this time, logging trucks took over as the dominant form of bush transport. In the film clip a typical logging truck removes a large pine log from Kāingaroa Forest, in the central North Island.
