These tables list the national and conservation parks in 2019. Although there are fewer national parks than conservation parks, they cover a larger area of New Zealand’s protected land. Conservation parks include many forest parks, which were created following the establishment of the first one, Tararua Forest Park, in 1954. They include much of the main axial ranges of the North Island, and a number of areas on the eastern slopes of the Southern Alps.
