George Laking in the Pacific

Audio file

George Laking (back row, second from right) accompanied the United Nations Mission to Western Samoa in 1947. The Mission recommended that New Zealand take an active role in preparing Western Samoa for self-governance. In this interview with Keith Ovenden, recorded for Radio New Zealand in 1979, Laking reflects on his travels around the Pacific Islands with Peter Fraser in the 1940s, and the beginning of his interest in New Zealand’s place in the world.
