Pioneer sports broadcaster Allan Allardyce describes giving the first live rugby commentary on the radio in New Zealand, on 29 May 1926. The occasion was a charity match between High School Old Boys and the Christchurch club. Allardyce made early broadcasts of many different sports, including boxing matches, hockey games and horse races. He reported on one 1926 race meeting from the top of a haystack to avoid getting in the way of race-goers.
