Kōrero: Care and carers

Family Care Radio

Audio file

Family Care Radio was an internet radio show and website for carers and those for whom they cared, which operated in 2008 and 2009. Its monthly programmes included regular features on legal issues, continence management, safety in the home, and managing health and stress. The programme for September 2009 discussed creative writing as an outlet for those who care at home, and Viv Nelson read a poem, 'Bedsheet', about the burdens faced by carers.

Transcript

My next poem is Bedsheet. [?] was keen that I wrote a poem about all the washing that I did. My younger son, he is now finally a lot better but I still have a lot of washing to do. This one is called Bedsheet.

Black sheets of paper overlay,
wet head sheets lay over the line,
dripping words of my life
is the bed wet again?
No words to describe
how I've been cheated
of an ordinary life
tricked and short-sheeted.
