In 1948 artist Doris Lusk stayed with friends at Kaitawa and painted a series of works based on the Lake Waikaremoana power scheme. Her painting of Tuai, which was reproduced as a stamp in 1999, creates an impression of isolation by focusing on the bare mountains and still waters of Lake Whakamarino. The settlement is relegated to a handful of buildings in the foreground. The pale green and white colour of the lake has an air of unnaturalness which hints at its artificial origins.
