The Scandinavian partnership of Richter and Nannestad built this large sawmill on the Whanganui railway line in 1878, at what is now Bunnythorpe. The workers’ settlement was named Trondhjem (Trondheim), the capital of Norway during the Viking era and birthplace of one of the partners.
