Shy or white-capped albatrosses are the most abundant species in New Zealand, with the biggest population – around 75,000 pairs – here on Disappointment Island, a small island west of Auckland Island. The mass of white dots all along the hillside are albatrosses sitting on nests. This photograph was taken in 1973, before accidental bycatch in trawling and long-line fishing operations began to affect numbers.
