Turbot (Colistium nudipinnis) are bottom-dwelling fish, which scientists have trialled as a possible aquaculture species. These juveniles were reared at the National Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research’s Māhanga Bay aquaculture facility. Researchers found that this endemic flatfish could be reared in tanks. If trials translate into practice, marketable-sized turbot of around 400 grams could be reared in about two years.
