Some petrels, like these fulmar prions on the Bounty Islands nest in crevices. Such sites provide shelter from the weather and from predatory skuas and gulls. Generally only the largest petrels – giant petrels and albatrosses – nest in the open, although smaller ones sometimes settle for cliff ledges that offer partial protection.
