All petrels lay only one egg, and they invest a lot of energy in ensuring that the chick survives to fledge. This Cape petrel and its mate will incubate the egg for 45 days, brood the chick for 8 days and continue to feed it until it fledges at 52 days old. From then on the fledgling fends for itself at sea, and if it survives it is likely to begin breeding from the age of six.
