Mining and oil exploration were two activities that traditionally banned women because they were thought to bring bad luck. Julie Palmer (née Hogan) was one of the first women in New Zealand to work as a petroleum geologist, including spending time on offshore drilling rigs. She was involved in exploration of the McKee oilfield in the early 1980s, when oil was discovered. She lectures in petroleum geology and sedimentology at Massey University.
