Adriana Pieters was born into a wealthy shipping family in Rotterdam, and in 1881 married an Englishman, Arthur Swarbrick. Following the wedding they sailed for New Zealand, where Arthur had a farm on the outskirts of Hamilton. Adriana and her husband are pictured soon after their marriage.
