Hanmer marble

The cover for a volume of The Dictionary of New Zealand biography features a close-up of Hanmer marble. This is the commercial name for a hard limestone in shades of pink or red that contains large shell fragments. It has been widely used for decorative panels. The colour is caused by small amounts of volcanic ash.
