Clad in Ōamaru limestone, the Catholic Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Christchurch is one of New Zealand’s finest classical buildings. It was opened in 1905. Francis Petre designed the building in a renaissance basilica style, and it is constructed from concrete sheathed with limestone. The cathedral was severely damaged in the February 2011 earthquake, and in 2019 the church decided to demolish it and build a new cathedral on a central-city site.
