Other animals threaten Northland’s population of the flightless kiwi. Between 1990 and 1995, dogs caused 70% of the kiwi deaths reported in the region. Programmes to control cats, dogs, stoats and other predators, and to reintroduce kiwi to suitable areas, aim to boost kiwi numbers.
