Kaitangata mine

Kaitangata mine

This photograph shows the Kaitangata mine in the mid-1870s. It was one of the earliest, beginning operations in 1858. Although most of New Zealand’s major coal fields, including those on the West Coast, had been discovered by 1860, the first working mines were in the south.
