Albatross chicks are covered in down. They have stomachs large enough to store the big meals, which need to keep them going for several days between feeds. They are like large, fluffy hot-water bottles filled with oily liquid. Before they fledge their proportions will change considerably – their wings will undergo a growth spurt, and the down will be replaced by feathers.
