This photograph, from the Auckland Star, of Tangiwai was taken the day after the rail disaster. The damaged road bridge is in the foreground, but the rail bridge, about 200 metres upstream, was almost wholly washed away. Some of the carriages that plummeted from the damaged bridge can be seen in the river bed.
