Cyanidium cells

This transmission electron microscope photograph shows Cyanidium cells from Lake Rotokawa. The pale grains within the cells are starch accumulated by the alga, while the darker masses are the chloroplasts where photosynthesis takes place. The cells are ringed by amorphous silica.
