Penguins are protected by law in New Zealand, but they remain at risk from uncontrolled dogs. Here, two domestic dogs have gone on a spree, killing 72 little penguins in a short time. Cats and ferrets are also a threat during nesting. The number of little penguins has climbed quite quickly at sites where predators have been removed.
