Gutting squid

These workers are processing a catch of squid in 1982. In 1971 there were no reported landings of squid in New Zealand. In the 1970s Japanese vessels increased their catch of squid taken outside New Zealand’s 12-nautical-mile limit, and New Zealand fishermen began catching them in the late 1970s.
