Cold-rolling reduces the thickness of steel and changes its mechanical properties. Further processing is required to prevent the steel from rusting, and at this stage it is usually coated with oil. The steel coils can be annealed (heated and cooled to make them easier to work), or galvanised (coated with zinc, or zinc-aluminium alloy). Cold-rolled steel is available in a range of grades, suitable for different uses including car parts, flooring, shelving and saw blades.
