A few British lines virtually monopolised New Zealand’s trade with Europe. The only New Zealand line to trade for any length was an unusual one, Geo. H. Scales Ltd. You had to be a sheep farmer to buy shares in Scales, which every wool season for 80 years chartered a few ships to carry wool to Europe. Typical of the ships Scales chartered was the Clan Chisholm, shown loading (right-hand side of wharf) at Timaru around 1910.
