Raupō (bulrush) was used as covering on a number of smaller kites such as the manu taratahi, the horewai and the manu pātiki. Although raupō was not considered as good as aute (paper mulberry) bark, its leaves were occasionally used as a substitute covering for the wings and bodies of some of the large kites.
