In this publicity or advertising photograph, this family is listening to a radio show for their evening’s entertainment. Some old valve radios used mica capacitors (a component that stores electricity), but other materials soon proved to be superior. There was a brief flurry of interest in mica mining in New Zealand in the 1940s, but no good sources were found.
