Patagonian toothfish

Patagonian toothfish

These Ministry of Fisheries observers are collecting data on the Patagonian toothfish. Caught by longlines, the fish is highly prized in Japan and the United States. Because of its commercial value, it is in danger from overfishing by poachers. It is found in the Southern Ocean, where illegal fishing is estimated to be five to ten times the recommended catch levels. In addition, longline fishing can ensnare large numbers of seabirds. New Zealand vessels complying with international regulations have been fishing toothfish in the Ross Sea from 1996, and are involved in research to establish sustainable management.
