Probably photographed around the end of the 19th century, these two workers are hauling a load past the kiln in a Christchurch ceramics factory. Piles of coal used to fire the kiln are in the foreground. Clay was fired into bricks, roofing tiles and drainpipes. In many New Zealand towns, kiln smokestacks were a familiar sight on the skyline.
