Solar-powered lighthouse, Foveaux Strait

Centre Island sits at the western approach to Foveaux Strait. This 12-metre kauri lighthouse marks the dangerous entrance. Between 1878 and 1987 the lighthouse was manned by up to three keepers. The light is now powered by solar panels (foreground), which are monitored by computer from Wellington.
