Shown here is the Wellington march held as one of the ‘sister marches’ of the Women’s March movement in January 2017. Internationally, an estimated five million participants in over 60 countries marched in protests timed to coincide with the inauguration of US President Donald Trump. The focus of the marches was the protection of women’s rights. One sign reads ‘Kate Sheppard sent me’, a reference to 19th-century suffragist Kate Sheppard, who helped win votes for women in New Zealand. This sign and many others were later collected by Te Papa Tongarewa as a record of protest in New Zealand.
