Haurongo: Beaven, Peter Jamieson

Canterbury Arcade, Auckland

Image
An Auckland streetscape showing a variety of buildings, including the Canterbury Arcade, projecting above the other buildings.

The Canterbury Arcade was designed by Peter Beaven in 1968. It connected High and Queen streets with a shopping arcade through two existing buildings and inserted a new narrow office building inspired by the Mediterranean. Seen here looking into High Street, the new building is the tallest, its lower portion topped by a balcony. The original arcaded building is to its left, with the CBS sign in between.
