Mussel harvesting

Mussels are ready for harvest when they are 12–18 months old. Growing ropes are hauled onto boats and stripped of their mussels. The clumps of mussels are separated, washed and then bagged, ready for sale. This photograph shows the rope hauling and stripping process on a boat in Big Glory Bay, Stewart Island.
