Tuai, 1818

Tuai was painted by James Barry in 1818. The Church Missionary Society arranged for Barry, a lay member of the Society, to paint formal portraits of both Tuai and Tītere before they left England. It is likely the two men sat several times for Barry. Framed portraits of the pair were presented to the society on 12 October 1818. The painting of Tuai shows his half-face moko (tattoo).
