The pūkeko or swamp hen (Porphyrio melanotus) is a common resident of the rushlands that border estuaries and associated waterways. Found throughout New Zealand, pūkeko graze on swamp vegetation and nearby pastures, as well as eating insects, eggs and ducklings.
