A river meets the sea

A river meets the sea

This photograph shows the outlet of the Waimahia Stream at Waikanae Beach, just north of Wellington. The small estuarine area has formed behind a sandspit where stream water mixes with sea water. Fresh stream waters, stained brown after being filtered through layers of decomposing forest litter, enter the sea on an outgoing tide.
