Members of Porirua's Tokelau community work carving an outrigger vaka (canoe) from two huge tōtara logs. The project began in late 2011 in the hope of interesting young people in Tokelauan traditions. The carving was led by master carver Vase Reupena, and the project received financial assistance from Creative New Zealand following an application from community member and artist Moses Viliamu. It was hoped that once the carving was complete, the vaka would be launched and used to teach young people fishing and navigational skills.
